GED Program Enrollment

There is no cost to enroll in the program.  Prospective students are evaluated using the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to confirm that they are academically prepared to enter a GED preparation track. In order to accommodate students as soon as they are ready, the program uses a rolling admissions model and offers the TABE twice every week with 25 seats available at each testing.  If the test results indicate that the student’s reading level is roughly below the 8th grade level, he or she is referred to Greenville Literacy Association for remedial study. All other students are enrolled and are invited to start the program immediately.

  • In the last year, 1516 individuals took the placement test.
  • 519 individuals were referred to GLA.
  • 1042 individuals enrolled and joined the 947 students already in the program, for a total student body of 1989 individuals.

Of these students:

  • 48% were males and 52% were females
  • 47% were African-American, 43% were Caucasian, 3% were Hispanic, less than 1% were Native American, Asian, or Pacific Islander, and 6% were multi-racial or other
  • Roughly 50% of students are 24 or younger
  • In addition to the general public, frequent referral sources include the Pretrial Intervention Program (PTI), Probation and Parole, the Overcomers Program (Miracle Hill), and Serenity Place
