Medical Access Simulation

Even if the cost of health care were adequately addressed, many of our poorest citizens would still have access issues. This new simulation created by United Ministries is short and to the point, highlighting the issues of transportation pressures, the challenges of knowing where to go for specific services, the difficulties of aligning agency hours with a busy working schedule and the difficulties of following through with medical treatments.

Cost: $10 per person.  Note:  The Medical Access Simulation Kit is available for purchase for $49.95 plus shipping.

Who Participates: medical professionals and those interested in healthcare and related issues

Group size: 8 - 25 participants

Space requirements: A large room with five tables and a number of chairs.  Request the floor plan set up.

How It Works: Participants draw one each of four cards: Illness, Transportation, Working Hours, and Healthcare Coverage.  Those who qualify according to the Healthcare Coverage card receive money.  Each person has an "illness" that requires medical treatment.  They can go to one or more of four medical clinics.  If they qualify for treatment, a medical provider will "treat" them.  After 15-20 minutes, participants gather to talk about their insights and feelings for the experience.

Participant Feedback:

  • "It opened my eyes to how difficult it is to obtain medical attention and the "run-around" these patients experience.  Giving healthcare providers a sense of what our patients go through. The discussion afterwards was very eye-opening."
