"I Want to Work" Job Fair Simulation

The "job fair" simulation is designed for teens to demonstrate how difficult it can be to get a job if one does not have education, transportation, housing, identification, and good health. The experience addresses the complexity of getting a job, especially for low-income and homeless people in our community.

Cost: $25 donation requested.  Note:  The "I Want to Work" simulation kit is available for purchase for $49.95 plus shipping.

Who Participates: Teens (middle and high school)

Group size: A maximum of 25 participants

Space requirements: A large room with five tables and a number of chairs.

How It Works: Participants draw six (6) cards that define their education level, current state of health, transportation availability, identification cards, housing situation and age/gender. They then interview for 11 jobs with four companies. In Part 2 of the simulation, participants receive a "salary" from their new job and must budget their resources to see what kind of housing, transportation, groceries and luxuries their salary can afford them.  After each part, participants debrief their experience.
